Beginning in about 100 BC, a network of overland trade routes developed to carry goods between Asia and Europe. The earliest, most direct and most heavily used Silk Road is a significant symbol of the powerful civilization of East Asia and Central Asia in the ancient time, which made great contribution to the communication of trade, technology and culture between the ancient China and the western area. The Great Silk Road first operated as a route between China and the capital of the Roman Empire in the 2 nd century BC. It was approximately 7000 kilometers long. The most valuable commodity imported from China was silk, which is an obvious explanation why this entire transcontinental trade route was named The Silk Road. The Silk Road was a by-word for rich caravans, but primarily it was the name of the network of trade routes that, in ancient times, led from China through Central Asia to Europe.
